Pilly Labs: Why I Built My Own Supplement Brand and What It Taught Me About Marketing

July 13, 2026 By Kevin Mahoney Leave a Comment

I Didn't Start Pilly Labs to Sell Supplements — I Started It to Prove a Point

Every day, I help brands build authority, earn trust, and grow through strategic content. I've done it for dozens of clients across health, wellness, finance, and tech. But somewhere along the way, I realized something was missing from my pitch: I'd never built a product brand myself.

Not a consulting brand. Not a service company. A real, physical product that ships in a box to someone's door — and either earns their loyalty or doesn't. That gap nagged at me. So in 2024, I decided to close it. I founded Pilly Labs, a functional mushroom supplement company built on the principles I preach to every client: transparency, evidence-based positioning, and brand authority that's engineered, not assumed.

What happened next taught me more about marketing than any campaign I've ever run for someone else.

The Supplement Industry Has a Credibility Problem

I chose functional mushrooms deliberately. Not because it was easy — the space is crowded — but because the industry was practically begging for disruption. Spend ten minutes researching mushroom supplements and you'll find a pattern that should concern anyone who cares about consumer trust:

  • Proprietary blends everywhere. Brands list impressive-sounding ingredient panels but hide the actual amounts behind “proprietary blend” labels. You have no idea if you're getting a clinically relevant dose or a dusting of each ingredient.
  • Marketing budgets that dwarf R&D. Companies like Goli, Ritual, AG1, and Seed have built massive brands — and credit to them for that — but their dominance comes primarily from marketing spend, influencer deals, and packaging design, not necessarily from having the best formulas on the shelf.
  • Pseudo-science masquerading as health claims. “Boosts immunity!” “Supercharges your brain!” These definitive claims are everywhere, and almost none of them are backed by the kind of rigorous evidence they imply.
  • Mycelium-on-grain sold as “mushroom supplements.” This is the industry's dirty secret. Many brands use mycelium grown on grain substrates — which means a significant portion of what you're consuming is starch filler, not actual mushroom compounds. It's cheaper to produce, and most consumers don't know the difference.

I saw all of this not just as a problem, but as an opportunity. If I could build a supplement brand that did the opposite of everything I just listed — and make it work commercially — that would be the most powerful case study I'd ever create.

How Pilly Labs Does Things Differently

Pilly Labs isn't built on marketing tricks. It's built on four commitments that guide every product decision we make:

10:1 Fruiting Body Extracts — Not Mycelium on Grain

Every mushroom ingredient in a Pilly Labs product uses 10:1 fruiting body extracts. That means we use the actual mushroom — the part that contains the highest concentration of beneficial compounds like beta-glucans, triterpenes, and hericenones — and we concentrate it at a 10-to-1 ratio. It costs more. It's harder to source consistently. But it's what the research is actually based on, and it's what consumers deserve.

Full Transparency on Every Label

No proprietary blends. Period. Every Pilly Labs product lists the exact amount of every ingredient. If you're getting 500mg of Lion's Mane per serving, the label says 500mg of Lion's Mane. You can compare our doses against published research and decide for yourself whether the formula is worth your money. That's how it should work.

Evidence-Qualified Claims Only

You won't find “cures,” “treats,” or “guarantees” anywhere on our site or packaging. We use language like “may support,” “research suggests,” and “traditionally used for” — because that's what the evidence actually supports. Preliminary research on Lion's Mane and cognitive function is genuinely promising. But it's preliminary. Telling customers otherwise would be dishonest, and dishonesty is a terrible long-term brand strategy.

Mission-Based Product Design

Instead of launching 50 SKUs and hoping something sticks, we organized our entire product line around four clear missions — specific wellness goals that real people actually have. Every product maps to a mission. Every mission is distinct. No redundancy, no filler SKUs.

The 4 Missions Behind Every Pilly Labs Product

When I designed the product line, I started with the question every good marketer asks: What does the customer actually need? Not what can we sell — what do people wake up wanting help with? The answers organized themselves into four missions:

Morning Focus

Cognitive clarity and sustained energy to start the day without the jitter-crash cycle of excess caffeine. This mission drives our Lion's Mane-forward formulas and our mushroom coffee blends — products designed for people who want sharp thinking from their first cup to their afternoon meetings.

Evening Calm

Relaxation and stress relief for better sleep quality. Reishi is the star here — one of the most well-researched functional mushrooms for its calming properties. Our Evening Calm products are for the person whose mind won't stop racing at 10pm.

Daily Baseline

Foundational immune and wellness support you take every day without thinking about it. This is where broad-spectrum blends shine — Turkey Tail, Chaga, Maitake — mushrooms with research-backed connections to immune function. Not a magic shield. A daily foundation.

Resilience

Adaptogenic support for stress response and recovery. Cordyceps and adaptogenic blends designed for people who push hard — athletes, founders, anyone whose lifestyle demands sustained performance under pressure. The research on adaptogens and cortisol modulation is still evolving, but the traditional use case spans centuries across multiple cultures.

The Products: 10 SKUs Across Three Formats

Pilly Labs currently offers 10 products spanning three delivery formats, all at a consistent $47.99 price point. Each format serves a different use case and preference:

Mushroom Gummies — Our most popular format. Two gummies per serving, great taste, no capsule fatigue. These are the entry point for people who are curious about functional mushrooms but aren't ready to commit to powders or tinctures. The gummy format also makes consistent daily dosing effortless — they sit on the counter next to your coffee, and you actually remember to take them.

Mushroom Coffee Blends — For the person who already has a morning coffee ritual and wants to enhance it rather than add a separate supplement step. Our coffee blends pair organic medium-roast coffee with concentrated mushroom extracts. You get your caffeine and your functional mushrooms in one cup. The mushroom flavor is subtle — earthy but not overpowering.

Liquid Drops — The highest-bioavailability format we offer. Liquid extracts absorb faster than capsules or gummies, making them ideal for people who want rapid delivery. A few drops under the tongue or mixed into any beverage. These are popular with our most serious customers — the ones who research absorption rates and care about bioavailability data.

Every product ships direct to consumer. No retail middlemen inflating the price. No wholesale margins to protect. That $47.99 price point reflects our actual cost structure — quality ingredients, transparent sourcing, reasonable margin.

Real Traction: 653+ Orders and Growing

Pilly Labs has processed over 653 orders and served more than 1,000 customers since launch. For a bootstrapped DTC brand competing against companies with tens of millions in venture funding and celebrity endorsement deals, those numbers represent something I'm genuinely proud of.

But here's what matters more than the order count: the repeat purchase rate and the customer feedback. People come back. They tell friends. They leave detailed reviews about what worked for them — the morning focus they noticed after two weeks on Lion's Mane, the improved sleep quality from the Reishi gummies, the sustained energy from the coffee blends without the afternoon crash.

That kind of organic word-of-mouth doesn't happen when you're selling mediocre products with great packaging. It happens when the product actually delivers.

What Building Pilly Labs Taught Me About Marketing

Running a product brand changed how I think about every client engagement. These aren't theoretical insights — they're lessons I learned by spending my own money, managing my own supply chain, and reading my own customer reviews at midnight.

You Cannot Fake Product Quality

Marketing can get someone to try your product once. Only product quality gets them to buy it again. I've seen brands with brilliant marketing and terrible products — they grow fast and collapse faster. With Pilly Labs, I invested in formula quality before I invested a single dollar in marketing. That decision shaped everything that followed, and it's now the first conversation I have with every new client: Is your product actually good? Because if it isn't, no amount of content strategy will save you.

Brand Authority Must Be Engineered

When I launched Pilly Labs, nobody had heard of us. We had zero domain authority, zero press mentions, zero brand searches. Building credibility from absolute zero required a deliberate, systematic approach — the same brand authority engineering framework I now deploy for clients.

I placed Pilly Labs products in front of independent editorial teams across multiple health and wellness publications. Not paid advertorials. Not sponsored posts. Genuine editorial features where real reviewers examined our formulas, verified our ingredient claims, and published their honest assessments. Some of those reviews pointed out limitations — and that was fine. Balanced, credible coverage builds more trust than a wall of five-star praise.

Multi-Platform Publishing Beats Paid Ads

Here's something most supplement brands don't understand: a single paid Instagram ad disappears the moment you stop paying for it. But an independent editorial feature on a health authority site continues generating organic traffic, brand searches, and consumer trust for months — sometimes years.

Pilly Labs' brand recognition accelerated faster through strategic content placement across multiple authority publications than it ever could have through paid advertising alone. And the cost per acquisition? Dramatically lower. The compounding effect of multiple independent sources all covering your brand creates a search landscape that paid ads simply cannot replicate.

Building Your Own Brand Gives You an Unfair Advantage as a Consultant

There's a difference between a consultant who theorizes about brand building and one who has done it — who has sweated over supplier negotiations, agonized over pricing strategy, dealt with shipping logistics, and read every single customer review personally. Building Pilly Labs gave me operational empathy that makes me a better strategist for every client I work with.

When a client tells me their manufacturer lead times are killing their launch timeline, I don't just nod — I've lived it. When someone asks whether investing in premium content placement actually moves the needle for a new brand, I don't show them a case study from someone else's business. I show them mine.

The System Transfers

The content architecture, the SEO content strategy, the multi-platform authority building, the editorial placement pipeline — the system I built to grow Pilly Labs from zero is now the exact system I deploy for every client engagement. It's been stress-tested with my own money and my own brand reputation on the line. That's a level of validation that no amount of theoretical expertise can match.

Explore Pilly Labs Yourself

I'm not going to hard-sell you on mushroom gummies in a marketing blog post. If you're curious about functional mushrooms, or if you just want to see what a transparency-first supplement brand looks like in practice, visit pillylabs.com and explore the products yourself. Read the labels. Check the doses against the research. That's exactly what we built the brand to withstand.

You can also read the full Pilly Labs case study to see how we took the brand from zero authority to a recognized name in functional mushrooms through strategic content placement and brand authority engineering.

The Bigger Picture

Pilly Labs exists because I believe the best marketers don't just advise — they build. Telling clients how to grow a brand is one thing. Showing them a brand you grew yourself, from scratch, using the exact strategies you're recommending? That's something else entirely.

I build brands for a living. I built my own to prove the system works. Every order Pilly Labs fulfills, every customer who comes back for a second purchase, every independent review that validates our formula quality — it all reinforces the same thesis: brand authority, built correctly, compounds over time and outperforms every shortcut in the book.

If you want the same brand authority engineering working for your business — the same system that took Pilly Labs from zero to a recognized supplement brand — let's talk. I'll show you exactly how it works, because I've done it myself.
