Why I Started My SEO Consulting Firm Marketing By Kevin
(Kevin Mahoney) My search engine optimization journey began in early 2013 shortly after leaving my job as a ROW (Rest of World) international sales manager for an industry-leading paintball manufacturing company called Kee Action Sports. When I first became interested in SEO and started learning more, the thought of forming an SEO Consulting Agency or any SEO business didn't cross my mind. I thought surely every business owner would catch onto the power of SEO, the internet and how it can be leveraged to benefit their specific businesses. However, the more I continue learning to this day, the more I feel addicted to learning SEO, and the more I realized very few people in general, better yet business owners, truly understood how this works and the real benefits.
Another realization that hit me hard as I started becoming more skilled and seeing more personal success with SEO was the amount of “SEO Experts” and “SEO Agencies” that guaranteed SEO success for unbelievably low prices. As it turns out, these offers still are and were too good to be true and were a classic example of unethical people taking advantage of a situation when given the opportunity. Due to the large scale of SEO companies overpromising, under delivering and doing a less than adequate job explaining the process of how they perform and provide their SEO results to their clients at the start of a project, this left an overall feeling of untrust in the SEO industry, and rightfully so in my opinion.
However, this does NOT mean businesses still don't need SEO which is ultimately what led me to start Marketing by Kevin. Unlike most other SEO Consultants, Marketing Experts, or Digital Agencies, before bringing on a single client or even attempting to take on new clients, I first created my new website with an SEO strategy hyper-targeting my core customer and got my actual search engine rankings to show as visual proof to demonstrate from the very start that we understand SEO and what it takes to succeed. Plus, for the most part, we will most likely be implementing a very similar strategy for your website and business.
Instead of attempting to convince you why we're great at SEO, I find it's more relaxed and far less invasive to make available precisely what we do, how we do it, why we do it, and then of course how we can do the same for you but tailored to your clients and business.
My goal is to set expectations from the beginning of a project to identify exactly:
- who your core customer is
- what specific information they're seeking to assist their buying process,
- and the best way to provide this into their search experience.
If you believe you worked with a company as I mentioned above in the past, please don't be embarrassed. When thinking about it, how could a plumber, lawyer, roofer, etc. be an expert at search engine optimization when they're already experts at their craft. I would be as lost as you are trying to do SEO if I were trying to do your expertise myself.
