Press Release SEO: How It Works, How to Write One, Cost

October 5, 2026 By Kevin Mahoney Leave a Comment

Yes, a press release can help your SEO, but as a support tool, not a ranking shortcut. A release on a news site gives you a public page people can find, share and link to, and it can bring brand mentions and some referral visits. No one, including us, can promise rankings, downstream pickup or traffic from a single release.

What does PR have to do with SEO?

Press release SEO means announcing a real business event (a launch, partnership, expansion, appointment, report or milestone) and planning the headline and opening around the one question a reader would actually search. Competing guides describe the same basics: one main keyword, a clear headline, a tight structure, and one or two useful links. Digital PR is the wider job of earning coverage from journalists. A wire release is not a personal pitch to a reporter, and the two are separate jobs. Our guide on distribution versus journalist pitching explains which one you are buying.

Do press releases actually help SEO?

They can help in limited, indirect ways:

  • A findable proof point. A live publisher URL can show up when someone searches your company or announcement. MarketersMEDIA shows an example of a client release ranking for a company name, which is a visibility example, not a promise.
  • Brand mentions and referral visits. If the release gets picked up or read, some readers may click through to your site. Pickup is up to the publishers and sites involved.
  • A page that supports your own content. Use the release to point readers to a useful page on your site. A wire URL does not replace that page.

Links are where people get burned. Paid or advertorial links that pass ranking credit can violate Google's spam policies. Digital Third Coast quotes a 2018 comment from Google's John Mueller that Google tries to ignore links from press releases because companies place them themselves. SirLinksalot, a link-building seller, says it allows only nofollow links in its releases for the same reason. We do not sell ranking credit or guaranteed backlinks.

Google also recommends helpful, reliable, people-first content. A release stuffed with keywords works against that. A clear, factual announcement fits it, though even that does not guarantee ranking.

How do you write a press release?

  1. Name one real announcement. Write one sentence with the change and its date, such as a second location opening on a set day. If it is only a discount or a claim to be the best, use your own marketing channels instead.
  2. Pick one reader and one destination page. Local customers, trade buyers and investors need different angles. Use a natural search phrase only if it truly describes the news.
  3. Build a fact sheet first. Record who, what, when, where and why it matters, plus a source for each claim, an approved spokesperson, a company description and a real media contact.
  4. Put the news in the headline and answer the 5 Ws in the opening. Who, what, where, when and why should be clear in the first two sentences. Some guides add how.
  5. Add context, one approved quote and a short About paragraph. Our own production releases run 500-700 words. A competitor guide suggests most land between 300 and 500.
  6. Get the exact final copy approved by whoever owns the facts and everyone quoted. Our pages on quote approval and the press release template go deeper.

Writing in 2026 is the same discipline: real news, the publisher's current rules, and a way to measure what happened. Competing guides suggest putting the key points in the first 250 words, and that also helps human readers.

What should you avoid in a press release?

  • Sales language. On the ACCESS Newswire route, a standard release must be a factual company announcement, not an advertisement, and the copy should avoid first-person or direct-address selling outside an approved quote.
  • Inflated claims, exclamation marks and all-caps emphasis.
  • Keyword stuffing, exact-match anchor text and too many links. One or two useful links is the common advice.
  • Unsupported facts, invented customer reactions or quotes nobody approved.
  • A release with no news. Routine updates are better as a blog post on your own site.
  • Repeating one story across several wires. It adds cost and does not add news.

Can ChatGPT write a press release?

An AI tool can produce a draft, and SEO Locale expects AI to help with drafting while human oversight stays essential for newsworthiness and accuracy. The risk is the facts. The publisher and your customers hold you responsible for names, dates, numbers, quotes, permissions and rights. Check every claim against your fact sheet, never let a tool invent a quote or milestone, and have the quoted person approve the final version. Then read the publisher's current content rules before you submit.

Can you do press release SEO for free?

Yes, you can do most of the work without paying a wire:

  • Write and approve the release using the steps above.
  • Publish a clear page on your own site and check it on a phone.
  • Pitch individual journalists whose beat fits, with a short email and a link to the approved facts.
  • Share it through your newsletter and social channels.

Free routes usually give you less reach and no formal publication record. Paid wire distribution buys a publisher-reviewed release, a network, and a record of what published. On our pricing page, we note EIN Presswire's $149 Basic plan as a sensible self-service option for real news and a publisher-ready release. We checked that price on September 25, 2026, so confirm current terms.

What about PR Newswire and Business Wire?

SEO Locale describes PR Newswire, Business Wire and Cision as paid services with broad reach and detailed reporting. Our routes use ACCESS Newswire and GlobeNewswire instead. If you need one of the other wires specifically, get a quote from that provider directly. Whatever the wire, even those premium services cannot make a weak announcement newsworthy.

What does wire distribution cost?

Our prices are one-time, with no retainer and no required call. They are as verified on September 23, 2026, so check the checkout for today's. You can see the full scope on our press release distribution services page.

Route Distribution only With our release production Publisher
Signature News $495 $890 ACCESS Newswire / Newswire
Global Authority $995 $1,390 GlobeNewswire
Complete Market $1,295 $1,690 Both routes

Release production is $395 for general business and includes a 500-700 word release, headline, subhead, boilerplate, one authorized quote and same-scope revisions for 30 days. A labeled article-style advertorial starts at $1,495, with writing included. It is paid commercial content, not independent coverage. Customer-supplied copy gets a mechanical preflight and managed submission, and substantive rewriting is not included.

Here is what the terms say if things go wrong:

  • No publication, no distribution charge.
  • If the publisher declines your own copy, you can revise and resubmit or take back the distribution charge. Once it is accepted and published, that charge is not refundable.
  • If we cannot get an eligible MBK-produced release accepted, the production-and-distribution amount is refunded.
  • If the primary publisher URL is removed within 12 months, we resubmit once. This does not cover lost rankings or removed third-party pickups.

Our terms say the publisher controls acceptance, downstream pickup, indexing and ranking. We do not promise rankings, backlinks, traffic, leads, sales or independent journalist coverage. GlobeNewswire's U.S. network lists Yahoo Finance among its destinations, but no specific pickup is guaranteed.

How do you measure whether a release worked?

  • Review referral visits and qualified inquiries at 7 and 30 days against a goal you set before publishing.
  • Check Google Search Console for the release page's queries.
  • Keep publisher-reported views, visits to your site and sales as separate numbers.
  • Save the live URL, publish time, any distribution report and the downstream URLs you can actually open.

For one example of what a report can show, a GlobeNewswire analytics report for one of our campaigns recorded 7,956 views, 1,142 unique readers and 203 clicks in five days. That is one campaign, not an average, minimum or forecast. Our page on what a distribution report proves explains how to read numbers like these.

Before you order

  • Can a stranger verify your news? If not, wait or use your own channels.
  • Have you read the publisher's current content rules? We do not set or waive them.
  • Do you have the facts, approved quote and media rights ready? Our pre-order checklist lists them.
  • Does the seller state what the report includes and what is not promised? Be wary of anyone guaranteeing rankings or specific outlets.
  • Is timing set? See press release timing.
